New photonics start-up hopes to bring new photonics and optics companies to Rochester

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC-TV) - Start-up companies in Photonics, Imaging, and Optics are now able to compete for $6 million in purse money and a place to set up shop in Rochester, through the Luminate New York contest.

High Tech Rochester is overseeing the competition, which is being funded with state money. High Tech Rochester is moving into space in the Sibley Building downtown, and creating a hub for local Photonics and Optics companies at that location.

Under the rules of the competition, $6 million will go to 20 start-up companies. The best of those companies will each be awarded up to an additional $1 million.

"Someone may develop a new kind of flat panel display or virtual reality headsets, or driverless cars, they have all kinds of sensors and cameras that look at things going on in the environment," says James Senall, president of High Tech Rochester. "Any one of those kind of companies would be candidates for the Luminate Accelerator Program."

High Tech Rochester will help contest winners develop their ideas and turn them into photonics products. The winning companies must agree to keep their business in Rochester for at least one year.

They expect up to ten new companies to be up and running by January.
