Nominees announced and tickets on sale for 9th Annual Reshaping Rochester Awards

ROCHESTER, NY – October 4, 2019 – The Community Design Center Rochester announced today that sixteen nominations were received for the 2019 Reshaping Rochester awards for Urban Innovation and Activism. Nominations were made by the public.

The Annual Reshaping Rochester Awards recognize exemplary projects and initiatives in the nine-county Finger Lakes region that make a positive impact on people, neighborhoods, and communities.

Winners of the Urban Innovation and Activism awards will be announced at this year's Reshaping Rochester Awards luncheon on Thursday, November 14, from 11:30AM to 1:30PM at Harro East Ballroom, 155 N Chestnut St in Rochester.

Individual tickets are $55 and tables of eight are $500. They will remain on sale until November 7th or until sold out and may be ordered online or by calling (585) 271-0520. Note: tickets will not be available at the door.

Monica McCullough, Esq., Founder and President of MM Development Advisors will deliver the luncheon's Urban Observations presentation. McCullough brings more than 15 years of experience in mission-driven housing and community development, and has served as a CDCR Board Member since 2017.

Nominees – 2019 Award for Activism in honor of Betty Strasenburgh Named in honor of a longtime Rochester activist and philanthropist, this award recognizes civic spirit, persistence, and determination in turning a vision into reality.

 Mary Anna Towler for decades of passionate, diverse, and accurate reporting on topics of urbanism, gentrification, and revitalization as founder and editor of Rochester City Newspaper.

 CJS Architects for their long history of making Rochester a better place through architecture and planning contributions.

 Coalition for Cobbs Hill for their advocacy to prevent the demolition of low-income senior apartments at Cobbs Hill Village.

 Roger W. Brandt, Jr. for being a leader in affordable housing development in the Greater Rochester Region.

Nominees – 2019 Award for Urban Innovation in honor of Robert Macon This award honors the late architect Robert Macon’s civic contributions and transformative projects that spanned a 30-year career.

Small Project Category (budget under $5 million):  11 Lamberton Park for the redevelopment of a vacant city lot in the Bull’s Head neighborhood as a rental duplex.

 600 East Avenue for its contribution to the public realm of historic East Avenue with contemporary design and landscaping.

 Brickyard Trail for bridging the gap between Elmwood Avenue and Westfall Road with a stone dust ADA compliant shared use corridor.

 RIT City Art Space for transforming uninhabited retail space in the historic Sibley Building into an off-campus gallery space that is highly visible and publicly accessible for creativity and innovation.

 South & Hickory Place for filling an open parcel with a mixed-use development that harmonizes with the scale and texture of adjacent historic structures in the South Avenue Preservation District.

 Sterling on Main for the removal of a one story, underutilized building and construction of a four story mixed-use building on Main Street in the Village of Fairport.

 Stevens Memorial Community Library for its use of both Community Block and Pioneer Library grants to renovate and restore the central library in Attica.

Large Project Category (budget over $5 million):  1255 Lofts for the renovation and joining of separate historic built elements into one cohesive loft apartment, commercial space, and industrial space.

 Eastman Student Living Center for its prominent architectural presence, Visit cdcrochester.org use of pedestrian scale materials, and grand courtyard.

 ROC the Riverway for its focus on the Genesee River Corridor as a key element in rejuvenating the City of Rochester.

 Spiegel Pittsford Community Center for its adaptive reuse of an existing 1916 school building combining a respect for the past with forward-looking design elements.

 Upper Falls Square Apartments for their capacity as an affordable housing development that offers community support services and is dedicated to reducing greenhouse gases through the Green Bonds program.

The Directors’ Award in honor of Joni Monroe recognizes efforts that advance the enhancement and vibrancy of the public realm. The CDCR Board of Directors selects the recipient of this award in honor of the organization’s founder and former Executive Director.
