From Manhattan to Rochester: Why one millennial moved downtown to Sibley apartments

Fresh out of University of Pittsburgh six years ago, Erika Utter couldn't wait to move to New York City.

The Victor High School graduate worked in contract management and had a small apartment she shared with two other roommates on the Upper East Side of Manhattan for $1,200 a month. While she enjoyed life in the city, she yearned for home ... and space.

Last month, a telecommuting job opportunity came through in her field and Utter, 27, moved back to the Rochester area and moved into the new Spectra at Sibley downtown. The one-bedroom apartment, with amenities such as in-unit laundry and shared work space and a lounge, costs $1,450 a month.

"I loved living in New York, but I can't afford my own apartment," Utter said.

The Spectra at Sibley Square is one of the many buildings downtown that have been repurposed to become luxury apartments. Along the same corridor are The Metropolitan that was the Chase Tower, The Temple Building and Tower280.

Sibley Square, the venerable former department store that's now in the process of being turned into a mixed-use site with housing, retail and work space, is in a 1.1 million-square-foot space on East Main Street.
